Feeding an Army on a Dime

Feeding the Army is the second scenario in the William Wallace learning campaign in Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. Designed for those who have never before played an Age of Empires game, it teaches the player how to gather resources with Villagers.

Intro [ ]

An army marches on its stomach, or so the old saying goes. My Clansmen have been farming and tending sheep for hundreds of years... but gathering enough food to feed an army is a different matter entirely.

Without a strong economy, the meager forces that we have cobbled together will collapse again.

Scenario instructions [ ]

Starting conditions [ ]

Objectives [ ]

  • Gather 50food, 50wood and 50gold.

Hints [ ]

  • Villagers can gather food, wood, gold, and stone that you will need to build buildings, research technologies, and create soldiers.

Scouts (Definitive Edition) [ ]

Your scouts report:

  • There are gold deposits to the northeast and southeast of your Town Center.

Players [ ]

Player [ ]

  • Player (Celts): The player starts with a little village in the center of the map.

Strategy [ ]

Gather food from the Forage Bushes or by hunting Deer. After the first Villager gathers and deposits 10 food, four more Villagers will join the player. Assign them to gather 40 more food, wood from trees, and gold from Gold Mines. Once at least 50 of each of the desired resources are in the player's stockpile, the scenario is won.

Outro [ ]

Edward Longshanks, for all his disrepute, has shown his military tactics in Wales, England, and France to be very effective, if not cruel and ruthless. He is indeed an enemy to be feared. The English sacked the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. With that I could call it a battle, but it was truly more of a massacre.

Unless we organize our army, there will be more massacres to follow. I pray we can be ready for Longshanks coming.

Trivia [ ]

  • The original version of the map holds a total of 895 food (but the player cannot collect it all, due to Deer rotting).
  • To win this scenario without completing the standard objective, the player is able to advance to the Imperial Age and construct a Wonder. After standing for 200 years, the Wonder will grant victory. As with the other scenarios in this campaign, however, the alternate route to victory is significantly slower. In order to reach the Imperial Age, the player must be careful never to have more than 50 of each of the necessary resources for the standard victory condition, and construct a Market in the Feudal Age to trade away all of an excess resource while the game is paused. This is no longer possible in the Definitive Edition, as it's not possible to go beyond the Dark Age.
  • Throughout the game, the speed cannot be changed.
  • The Town Bell has no effect and the Town Center can't be garrisoned.
